Are you planning on rebuilding your entire smile with All-on-4? If so, it’s important to know what to expect after the surgery, particularly when it comes to your diet. There are certain foods and beverages that you will need to stay away from until your mouth has sufficiently recovered. To make sure you’re fully prepared for the All-on-4 procedure, below is a brief overview of what you’ll be able to eat and drink afterward.

First Two Weeks: All-Liquid Diet

Your mouth is likely to be very sore after the All-on-4 procedure, so you will want to stay away from foods that require chewing for at least a couple of weeks. During this time, you’ll need to maintain an all-liquid diet. It’s important to make sure you’re getting a variety of liquid foods that will give your body the nutrition it needs for a successful healing process; good examples include broth, meal replacement shakes, and frozen yogurt.

When it comes to drinking, you should stick to cool liquids during the initial part of the recovery process. Hot beverages should be avoided until your mouth has sufficiently healed. Make sure that you drink plenty of water; staying hydrated is essential for healing.

It’s recommended that you avoid alcohol during your initial recovery. Not only can it interfere with healing, but it can also leave you more susceptible to infection.

Two Weeks to Three Months: Soft Food Diet

After the first two weeks, you should be ready to graduate from an all-liquid diet. That said, your implant posts will still be in the process of integrating with the jawbone. Until they do, you need to avoid exposing them to excessive pressure, and that means staying away from foods that are particularly hard and crunchy.

Fortunately, there are plenty of soft foods that you can enjoy while your implants are still fusing with the bone. Popular choices include applesauce, bananas, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and pasta. Before your All-on-4 surgery, it’s a good idea to head to the grocery store and stock up on soft foods that can be enjoyed during your recovery.

Remember, once the All-on-4 process is complete, the stability and chewing power provided by the implant posts will give you the freedom to eat virtually anything you want. Until then, it’s important to be mindful of what you eat and drink in order to ensure a smooth, successful recovery process.
